School’s Out…
How do we keep these kids
busy and continue learning?
We’ve gathered some activities
for you so you can keep
kids engaged and keep your sanity.
Head to the Library!
Check your local library for summer activities and their summer reading program. Utilizing the public library is cost effective, eco friendly and educational. Kids of all ages can learn how to navigate the dewey decimal system, use the computer to search their interests and find endless books in their reading levels. Trips to the library can provide regular outings, activities and help keep kids on their educational path over the summer.
Take a Trip to the Park!
Have the kids help pack a picnic and choose activities they’d like to bring to the park. Some ideas: Sidewalk chalk, bubbles, wiffle ball, scavenger hunt. Include the kids in making sure everything needed is accounted for: Do you have sunscreen? Swim suits? Towels? What else do we need? Will this possibly be more work for you than just doing it all yourself? Yes. Will this teach your kids responsibility and help you raise capable kids? Also yes.
What Memberships Do You Have?
Take advantage of the memberships you have (museums, clubs, etc,). Look at their calendars to see what special exhibits may be touring this summer. Sit down with the kids and plan your visits to all the things that peak their interests.
Help Around the House!
If your kids are home during the day, involve them in all the daily activities and household chores. Younger kids can shadow older kids or adults and older kids can do things independently. Chore sticks are a great way to change things up each day. This list of age appropriate chores is a good reference. Helping with household duties is good for little brains on so many levels. Kids not only learn how be part of a team, they learn to appreciate how much goes into running a household.
